My Story
My name is Jonathan and I'm founder of Savory Terrain. I'm also the guy doing a handstand in the picture above. Nice to meet you!

I've always loved good food, but my food journey really took off back in December of 2007 when I started a 10-year journey working for the top catering company in Utah. My taste buds were treated to culinary delights like sweet dates wrapped in bacon and topped with goat cheese, perfectly cooked flank steak with mashed parsnips, and salad made with spinach, gorgonzola, candied walnuts, crisp pears, and raspberries. Yum! The flavor combinations were incredible, and I discovered the magic that occurs when you expertly combine sweet, sour, salty, and savory (umami) ingredients.

A few years after starting the catering job, a friend introduced me to authentic balsamic vinegar from Italy. I was surprised to discover that it was much more complex and sweet than the sharp, highly acidic vinegars you typically find on grocery store shelves. I learned that the best balsamico tradizionale matures for at least 25 years. My curiosity was piqued and I dreamed of going to Italy someday to meet a balsamic maker and try more high-quality balsamic vinegar.

Fast forward to 2019, when my dream finally became a reality. I visited Emilia Romagna, the Italian province where famous foods like parmigiano reggiano, prosciutto di Parma, tortellini pasta, ragù Bolognese, and of course, balsamic vinegar are made. I was hooked! Since then, I've travelled extensively throughout the region and discovered amazing food while making new friends.
Savory Terrain was born out of my desire to share what I've learned with others so they can also enjoy the rich culinary heritage that Italy is famous for. I invite you to join me for a culinary adventure this year from August 31-September 7!
